HMS2 Maritime Heritage

HMS2 stands for “Heritage and maritime memories in the 2 seas region”. It was a cross-border cooperation between Nord/Pas-de-Calais in France, Sout-East England in the United Kingdom, West-Flanders in Belgium and Zeeland in the Netherlands. The main aim of the project was to establish a tight, layered and complementary cross-border partnership, in order to jointly improve, develop and promote our common maritime heritage and shared history.

As an independent partner of HMS2 project, the crew at LV21 secured some initial funding for particular aspects of the vessels development during the period December 2009 to June 2012. These included:

LV21 will be developed using environmentally sound processes, incorporating green features, such as sustainable planting. Ecofriendly energy sources will be employed and researched, including solar/photovoltaic panels (previously already fitted to the ship) and wind turbine, tidal power, grey water and waste heat. Renewable energy sources will be coupled with use of local suppliers and
sustainable materials, reuse of materials and use of recycled and recyclable materials

Documenting and creating an archival record of both the past and future life of LV21. Providing increased access and interpretation of the transformation process and maritime heritage past through:

• Documentation of the restoration of the ship – production of video, blog and photo journal.
• Heritage – interviews with past ship personnel, partnership working with Trinity House.
• Living Museum – virtual tours and interactive information, physical permanent and temporary displays onboard.

A fresh approach to accessiblity by implementing creative, digital solutions working with professional practitioners in disability arts development.

The project closed in June 2012.
