Poet Patience Agbabi invited local families to come aboard LV21 to break bread and explore the variety of different grains, loafs, flatbreads and baps through words and languages.
The final group poem inspired by the workshop was performed aboard LV21 during the Open Weekend.

Calling Gravesend – Through the Ears of Anothers | Radio Workshop with WordPlay
Leon and Zoe from WordPlay called out for young reporters with an interest in sound design to set up a studio in LV21’s Radio Room to help them collect interesting stories from the local community, Gravesend’s past and present residents, through phone interviews and field recordings to create audio stories.
Participants learnt to use mobile recording devices, useful interview techniques and how to record a phone conversation, while taking part in an adventure into storytelling, translation and location played out in reality and shared in audio.
The recordings were developed into independent audio works and played out on loops in different locations aboard LV21 during the Open Weekend event also online.
Land Marks | Animation workshop with RouteStock
Mike and Romana from RouteStock invited local artists, from professional to amateur, emerging to established, to create hand drawn animations recalling the lost, transient and contemporary icons of Gravesham, using the medium of 16mm film.
The artists facilitated a drop-in activity suitable for all ages to create a collaborative group animation film during the workshop.
Final film animations were shown aboard LV21 during the Open Weekend.
Paper Mill In-Forms | Installation by Steve Mace
Artist Steve Mace took inspiration from the local Bowater Tower and installed his work in LV21's lantern.
“The Bowater artwork, illuminated in the lantern of LV21 has been inspired by my childhood memories of Bowater Tower, as seen by me in the 1950/60s from the top deck of a 480 bus travelling between Greenhithe and Gravesend. The tower was a land mark and made a bold statement about the Bowater Paper Mill on the Thames at Gravesend.
‘Paper Mill – in forms’ is a project that follows on from my earlier work, ‘Cement Works – in forms’ which took place during the final years of production at the Blue Circle Northfleet cement works.”
