Draco Roffensis: The Rochester Dragon

We are delighted to be working with artist Wendy Daws to support the community engagement activity and production of Draco Roffensis

The Rochester Dragon as part of the MESS ROOM Connects and Rochester Cathedral partnership project commemorating 900 years of Textus Roffensis, a medieval manuscript.

Draco Roffensis: The Rochester Dragon has been inspired by illuminated artwork found within the pages of Textus Roffensis. This over 15 metre long Draco Roffensis sculpture, created by Wendy, will take flight at the Rochester Cathedral from 1 June to 21 September 2024.

Made of embossed gold, silver and copper foil scales attached onto metal wire panels, the dragon will be suspended above the Nave. The wings of the dragon, made from recycled materials from ‘Tape’ a recent exhibition at Chatham Dockyard by Numen/For Use, will carry the message of quotes from Textus Roffensis.

Before Draco Roffensis takes flight at Rochester Cathedral we need your help and invite visitors to Rochester Cathedral as well as local community, art and school groups to take part in decorating the 10,000 shimmering scales to dress up Drago Roffensis.
