Just drop-in, no booking required. Places allocated on first come, first served basis. All materials provided. Suitable for all ages and abilities. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
Join the crew and artists for an afternoon of free creative drop-in activities aboard LV21 and in the adjacent St Andrew’s Arts Centre and at Bawley Bay. You’re welcome to just pop by or stay for the whole afternoon.
Exploring Pattern and Texture with Jennifer Kidd
St Andrew’s Arts Centre
In this fun and engaging drop-in workshop you can explore mark making, roll printing and texturing with modelling clay. Led by experienced jeweller and silversmith Jennifer Kidd, you will get to try out lots of different mark making techniques using found objects and work with printmaking and jewellery tools. You can also paint your textured clay pieces and turn them into jewellery or small decorative wall pieces or magnets to take home.
Texturing metal with Stones on the Shore with Jo McAllister
Bawley Bay
Try your hand at creating texture on metal using beach stones, working outside at Bawley Bay on the shore of the River Thames with jeweller Jo McAllister. You will be using pewter, a soft, greyish-white metal that can be worked by hand. You will get to hammer a pewter disc to create your own unique texture, smooth off the edges with sandpaper and burnish those edges to a sheen with a river stone. Before you know it, you will have a tactile pocket piece or pendant to take away with you.
Meet the Artist Jane Sedgwick

Come to meet the current LV21 artist in residence Jane Sedgwick aboard the ship and find out more about her creative practice. Hear her thoughts on the time she has spent over the past month in Gravesend and aboard the ship, working with local makers and craft enthusiasts and exploring and getting inspiration from the rich nautical heritage of the area.

Please note: Due to tidal conditions public access aboard LV21 is between 1330-1600 only.
These activities are part of the LV21 Ship & Shore partnership project with Gravesham Borough Council supported by Arts Council England and the event runs alongside the Association for Contemporary Jewellery’s brooch exhibition ‘Meanings and Messages’ at St George’s Arts Centre, which you can visit until 29th May 2022.
Jane Sedgwick’s Forget-Me-(K)not Brooch and Jo McAllister’s ‘Winter Solstice Sun Worshipper’s Brooch are on display at the exhibition alongside 58 other ACJ member jewellers.
Please note:
As a historic ship access aboard LV21 is limited with main entry via a gangway and a steep staircase. Please wear flat, non-slip shoes when onboard. Regrettably there is no wheelchair access to the ship.

We remain committed to the highest standards of hygiene and cleanliness and have strengthened our detailed procedures in this area to minimise the spread of Covid-19. We advise keeping a safe distance from others while aboard. All internal areas are ventilated either through ventilation pipes, open doors and/or portholes. Number of people aboard the ship is limited and monitored to avoid overcrowding. Please do not visit if you have any Covid-19 symptoms or have tested positive for the virus.
